(30 contact hours)This course is offered in a four or five day format. The four day format is specifically designed for courses held at other facilities across the state. The five day format is designed for the course held at GERTI in Olathe, KS. The first day is optional for the five day course and does not include contact hours.

Course Description
This 40-hour course offers every employee in long-term care extensive training in this growing and dynamically changing field. This course will equip employees in the aging field to understand the new cultural / organizational changes emerging which changes the institutional medical model that long-term care has been functioning under for decades to the model based on person-centered care and neighborhood concepts. Participants will emerge from this course with a significantly improved outlook on the positive components of living and working in the long-term care setting.
Participants will be trained to improve the quality of life for residents by understanding the regulations, the survey process, and how to successfully incorporate them into the new models for long-term care. Comprehensive training in understanding dementia and interventions utilized to maximize cognitive and functional capacities and diminish disruptive behaviors will be taught. The needs of the dying resident and their grieving families will also be explored.
This course implements interactive education to improve communication and conflict resolution skills and build effective teams. Healthy employee habits and skills that promote management of stress and burnout are explored. Participants will also examine the concepts of respect, honesty, dignity, and responsibility and learn life skills that will improve their personal and professional lives.

- * Through a 2007 grant from Kansas Department on Aging the Advanced Education in Long-Term Care course is FREE to all non-licensed employees working in
Kansas skilled long-term care homes (nursing, activities,
dietary, laundry, maintenance, social work, medical records, therapy, management, etc.).
* Licensed employees in Kansas (administrators, nurses, social workers, therapist) may attend for FREE if attending with 2 or more non-licensed employees from the same skilled long-term care home.
* For $10 qualified licensed long-term care employees receive 30 contact hours of continuing education.
* For participants not employed in long-term care or not qualifying under the KDOA grant the course price is $255 and includes 30 contact hours of continuing education.
